SMMLTA Finals - 15/16 Season
21-Mar-2016

MDTC had three teams in the finals this year; the Div 2 and Div 4 traditional teams and Team Red in the Div 2 Doubles competition. After a tough finals campaign MDTC were triumphant in 2 out of the 3 Grand Finals contested.

The Div 2 Traditional team, lead by Darren Furst, won in a typically dogged match against Kensington Gardens, splitting the doubles rubbers and  eventually taking the last rubber of the Grand Final to win 4 rubbers to 2.

The Div 4 Traditional team, lead by Harry Wood, had a slightly easier match. After wining both opening Doubles rubbers in straight sets, Aaron Neaves won his No. 2 Singles rubber in equally decisive fashion leaving the team only needing a single set in the other 3 singles rubbers to take the flag. Marco Gleeson, in the No. 1 Singles rubber did the honours taking the first set off his opponent, going on to win his rubber in 3 sets. John O'Brien not to be outdone won his No. 3 rubber in straight sets. A special mention should be given to the captain of this team, Harry Wood, as he was up against one on the wiliest players in the comp. Reade Park had, as they have done many time in the past, placed a player at the No. 4 Singles position that, it could easily be argued, should have been playing much higher in the order. This Reade Park player went through the season undefeated until he ran headfirst into the Harry Wood roadblock! In the first final Harry played this guy into the ground finally beating him 0-6, 6-5, 6-5 in 39 degree heat. Come the Grand Final, Harry was anticipating another tough rubber, again he went down in the first set, this time 1-6 but fought back taking the second set 6-2 at which time the Reade Park player, already beaten, threw in the towel offering Harry the option to call it a draw. So MDTC won the Div 4 Grand Final 5 rubbers to nil.

The Div 2 Doubles Team, lead by David Gambling, had a very tough opponent in their final. The Kensington Gardens team they were up against would have made a very good Div 1 team let alone a Div 2 team. Unfortunately the results were predictable and as hard as the MDTC team fought they lost in straight rubbers.

Our club photographer was there to capture some of the action. To check out the Div 2 team photographs click this link for the Semi-final and here for the Grand Final.
